How has responsible and balanced breeding developed throughout the years?

It started in the 1990s with the Farm Animal Breeding Society, to the SEFABAR project in 2000 and the first Code of Responsible and Balanced Breeding, CodeEFABAR, developed in 2004.

The foundation and progress of Code EFABAR have been shaped by collaboration between breeders, scientists, researchers, ethicists, and many other.

Since 2005, Code EFABAR has grown into a widely recognised voluntary code of good practice in Farm Animal Breeding.

Updated every three years, it reflects how breeding continues to respond to societal expectations and environmental challenges — with the active engagement of breeders and their stakeholders.

Now in its 7th edition, Code EFABAR stands as a reference for responsible and balanced animal breeding from insects, aquaculture, ruminants and monogastrics — and is actively adopted by breeding organisations across Europe and beyond.
