The code of good practices for Responsible and Balanced Farm Animal and Aquaculture Breeding
In the realm of animal breeding, the focus has traditionally been on productive traits. However, the last three decades have seen a significant shift towards sustainable practices. This evolution signifies a growing recognition of the importance of responsible and balanced breeding.
Code EFABAR embodies this shift. It is built on six pillars that form the foundation of modern, responsible, and balanced breeding:
By adhering to Code EFABAR, breeders demonstrate their commitment to these principles, thereby facilitating responsible and balanced breeding of farm animals while ensuring transparency for society at large.
Initiated in 2005, Code EFABAR stands as a testament to animal breeders’ dedication to responsible and balanced breeding. It has evolved from various funded projects, through collaborations with various stakeholders and scientists, including animal breeders, bioethicists, welfare experts, economists, lawyers, and consumers, funded by numerous European Commission projects.
These partnerships have been instrumental in defining sustainability and identifying areas where ‘breeding can make a difference’.
Updated every three years, Code EFABAR reflects the dynamic nature of modern breeding programs in responding to environmental challenges and societal expectations — the next version set to be presented in 2026.
