What is Code EFABAR?

Code EFABAR is a proactive initiative from the European animal breeding sector, setting standards for responsible breeding practices. It aligns with EU policies, promotes sustainability, and supports ethical breeding across species, including terrestrial livestock, aquaculture, and insects.

Promoting Responsible and Balanced Breeding across the EU

Responsible and balanced breeding means finding a sustainable compromise for the people, the planet, and for farmed animals between traits related to the health and welfare of animals, their environmental impacts, and the quality and quantity of production (milk, meat, fish meat and eggs) whilst keeping genetic diversity.
Currently, pigs and poultry only need half of the feed needed 40 years ago. Other examples of breeding elements are: improving robustness and longevity for dairy,  leg strength in both pigs and poultry, improving positive behaviour, osteoporosis in laying hens, or disease resistance in aquaculture.

Why?

Code EFABAR aligns with key policy initiatives, including:
✅ EU Green Deal and Farm to Fork Strategy

✅ UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

✅ Scientific advancements in sustainable breeding

This ensures breeding organizations are
proactive rather than reactive to regulatory and societal expectations.

An increasing number of breeding organisations have already adopted Code EFABAR
